Tom Orsman

Tom Orsman is the founder of Shimaguni School and a lifetime student of Japanese. Tom first went to Japan in 2002 and lived there for 9 years. While working in Japan, Tom learnt to speak Japanese and passed N1, the highest Japanese Language Proficiency Test first in Japan and then later in the UK.

Tom only began learning Japanese at 24, but he has been fascinated by it ever since. He can help you learn the language from his unique perspective, first as bewildered visitor to Japan, then as a long-term Tokyo resident working in a Japanese company.

Try a 30 minute class with Tom to see how you get on.

Mari Maeda

I am from Mie and have lived in Kyoto and Tokyo. As a native speaker of Japanese I will teach you not only Japanese grammar, characters,  pronunciation but also all the subtleties and nuances of Japanese culture appropriate to any situation.

My approach to teaching, especially in private lessons, is to find a method that aligns with my students' learning styles. Before lessons begin I will consult with you to provide a class in line with your wishes and objectives.

Of course, if you don't have any goals but just want to get started, or to do something new and fun, we welcome you to join us!
